Does Winning Chargebacks Protect My Account?

Written by Avia Chen

Winning chargebacks is a great step — but it doesn't fully protect your merchant account on its own.

Here's what to keep in mind:

Won Disputes Still Count Toward Your Chargeback Ratio

Even when a chargeback is successfully disputed and resolved in your favor, it still counts against your chargeback ratio. Card networks measure this ratio based on the number of disputes filed — not the outcome. So a dispute that gets reversed still factors in simply because it was initiated.

Other Risk Factors Are Also Evaluated

It's also worth knowing that payment processors like Stripe look at more than just your chargeback rate. Even merchants with a very low dispute rate (e.g., 0.1%) may have their accounts flagged or reviewed based on other considerations, such as business model, industry type, compliance standing, and overall account activity.

Account security is most closely tied to maintaining a low chargeback ratio — the number of chargebacks relative to your total monthly transactions.

For proactive protection, Chargeflow offers two powerful tools: Chargeflow Alerts, our chargeback prevention service powered by Visa and Mastercard's networks, and Chargeflow Prevent, our AI-powered fraud prevention solution that stops disputes before they happen — right after purchase, before fulfillment.
